Modern and Vintage

Explore this timeless approach to home decor with five woman-owned brands

In partnership with

Hello friend,

I love the Fall. For me, it’s nesting season. Time to make my home feel warm and cozy for the colder weather. My home is a blend of traditional and modern. My most prized possessions are antique pieces handed down through generations of my family. Some of them had been tucked away, but a conversation with Maude & Arte founder Emily Holden, featured below, convinced me to showcase them along with more contemporary pieces and I’m so glad I did.

Each of the brands featured this week are in the home decor business and celebrate the warmth and beauty that comes when you layer modern and vintage pieces. The women behind each brand have an eye for timeless style and an appreciation for craftsmanship. I hope they inspire you as much as they inspire me!

The Fall Discovery Box is now in the hands of all customers and it’s been a thrill to hear from some of you about how much you love the box! I can now reveal what’s inside and invite you, whether you purchased the box or not, to enjoy exclusive offers from each of the brands.

Thank you to 1440 for sponsoring this week’s newsletter. As always, I appreciate your support!

Enjoy!

When I was renovating my home, I often consulted the work of Jaime Zimmerman. Her Instagram feed is a dreamscape of perfectly imperfect interiors. The Toronto Interior Designer’s career took off after renovating her own home, preserving its heritage features, while adding modern touches in perfect harmony.

Old and new. Emily Holden of Maude & Arte could teach a masterclass in how to combine relics of the past with modern pieces that create a lasting impression. Her shop of carefully selected finds and handmade pieces is a treasure trove of home decor inspiration.

Adding a handmade piece to your decor adds instant warmth. When the creator uses an age old technique and approaches it with a modern eye, it becomes a conversation piece. Find out how Shayla Bond is building a contemporary brand around the nostalgia of the quilt.

I’m a bit of a minimalist, but I always love the effect of adding a special piece of decor to freshen up a space. It’s all the more meaningful when it’s created by hand by a local artist. This is the specialty of Oriana Weeks-Bowering. Her shop near Collingwood, Ontario features beautiful homewares from artisans she loves. Every piece would work brilliantly in your modern vintage aesthetic.

What I love about Lisa Wrixon’s shop of curated vintage finds in Vancouver is the way she categorizes them by room and shows you how to style each space. Check often for new pieces she picks up in her travels. They tend to sell out fast!
