Respect for the Earth

Finds from women founders who care for the planet

In partnership with

Hello friend,

Earth Day is on Wednesday. It’s always a time of reflection. Am I doing my best to respect our environment? Are there things I could do differently to make a difference for the planet? While most of the brands I feature make sustainability a priority and include measures to protect the earth (I do write about woman-owned brands after all), I thought I would share some new finds and explore the ways each founder is doing their part to protect the environment.

Meet a Montreal-based designer who uses natural fabrics and doesn’t let a scrap go to waste. And the skincare founder who is obsessive about making the most natural, earth-friendly products she can. Meet the artist whose muse is Ontario wildlife and see how her work makes you reflect on nature. And the woman who wants you to grow your own microgreens, herbs and veggies to reduce plastic waste. Finally, meet the founder making tofu - one of the most earth-friendly plant proteins around - a tasty go-to snack.

This issue of the newsletter is sponsored by 1440. I’m grateful for the continued support! By now, you may know that the Genuinely Stellar Discovery Box is coming soon! If you haven’t already, add your name to the waitlist. It’s a limited edition. They go on sale soon, and they are sure to sell out fast!

Enjoy!

The designer behind this stylish summer look refers to her pieces as “twisted basics.” When she makes too much of something, she repurposes the garments and creates something new. Scraps are donated to an organization that makes pouches with the leftover fabrics. Her zero-waste mission and elevated basics are just a couple of the reasons I find her inspiring.

Every product in this line of skincare has no more than 12 clean and green ingredients. Each one is formulated on site in small batches and packaged with the earth in mind (yes, this balm comes in a cardboard jar). And it’s all on sale TODAY ONLY at 40% off in celebration of Earth Day, which coincides with the brand’s anniversary.

If this painting evokes a memory of springtime, you’re not alone. The artist behind it wants to draw you in to the detail of her work and create a sense of calm. Mission accomplished! You can catch her work in a solo exhibition at Coles Art Market in Huntsville, Ontario in the month of May.

When you buy vegetables or herbs from the grocery store, chances are you put them in plastic to bring them home. Worse, they come wrapped in plastic (am I the only one who wonders why they do that)? Meet the woman entrepreneur who is reducing plastic waste one compostable kit of seeds at a time.

Tofu is getting a glow up courtesy of the woman entrepreneur behind this brand new grab-and-go snack brand. The most eco-friendly source of protein around, she’s developed a way to enjoy it as a snack.

I had a great conversation a week or so ago with one of Canada’s few milleners. Her hats are works of art, and her story is a tale of resilience. I can’t wait to share it with in an upcoming issue of the newsletter.
