Hygge With Us

Cosy comfort for colder temps

Hello friend,

The summer-like weather we’ve enjoyed into October seems to be coming to an end, so we’ve become enthralled with the concept of hygge (pronounced hoo-gah). It’s the Danish philosophy that places value on comfort, wellbeing and the simple pleasures of life. It’s about coziness and surrounding yourself with people, things, food and drink that make you feel content, mentally and physically. While hygge is practiced 12 months of the year in Denmark, it manifests in warm cozy blankets, a glass of wine by the fire, long baths by candlelight and comfort food during harsh Nordic winters. We can relate! With temperatures starting to dip, we found lots of inspiration in hygge for this week’s newsletter.

We feature a favourite California clothing brand of Aynsley’s with a hygge mindset; we recommend an all-natural soap brand with an incredible story and the perfect salts for a hygge soak; Tonia shares a hygge-esque soup recipe with a star ingredient; we bring you a resource that will show you how to hygge and a bedding brand to help you make the coziest bed; and we introduce you to a woman-owned hotel in Copenhagen that is the perfect hygge retreat.

Our sponsor this week is The Root, a natural health care clinic with a wall of loose-leaf tea remedies to get you on a path to wellness. We encourage you to check out Dr Lauren and her team of experts. Hygge and wellness go hand in hand, after all.

Please respond to the poll below and let us know how we’re doing. We love your feedback and are always open to suggestions on how to make Genuinely Stellar even better!

Enjoy!

Every item this brand makes is in soft, cozy and hygge-worthy fabric from elevated basics to work wear, it’s the perfect starting place to build a stylish capsule wardrobe.

Nothing says hygge like a warm bath. We found the perfect bath salts to throw in the tub and a founder story that will warm your heart.

If you aren’t eating buckwheat please try! Find out what makes it delicious, versatile and healthy. Then use it in Tonia’s simple fall soup recipe. It’s hygge in a bowl!

Central to the hygge philosophy is a cozy, well-made bed. We found a Canadian women-owned bedding company with the building blocks for the hygge retreat of your dreams.

Since Denmark is the home of hygge, we found a woman-owned boutique hotel that puts sustainability and comfort at the forefront.

When you shop from our friends at Biko this month, 20% of the proceeds go to Rethink Breast Cancer in honour of a friend of the brand. It’s an excellent reason to pick up some modern nostalgic jewellery from a woman-owned brand love!

The first several weeks of school are behind us and chances are, your kids have come home with more than homework! If cold and congestion is sweeping through your family, we suggest this homemade chest rub from Science of Essentials.

Scandinavian mulled wine called Gløgg is not only fun to say but yummy to drink at this time of year. You can make your own here, or one of our favourite brands Kanel makes it easier for you with their ready-to-use packets of Hygge Mulling Spice

Looking for a way to preserve your fresh herbs for the colder months? Here’s a weekend project (beautifully executed, BTW) by @glorioustable. She shows us how to make our own herb infused oil, for a dose of summer flavour, all year long!

If you are familiar with the delicious pastries from the Danish Pastry House you probably love them as much as we do. Did you also know that the Danish-Canadian founder Anita Lauritsen now has 19 locations? Talk about sweet success!
